Naples, spring of 1873. The production of Aida set for the beginning of March had to be postponed due to the sudden illness of the soprano soloist and Giuseppe Verdi took advantage of the situation to compose a string quartet – the only piece of chamber music, and a magnificent one indeed, in his entire catalogue.
The last movement of the piece is a fugue and this circumstance sets the stage for an unprecedented Bach/Verdi dialogue in which a selection from Die Kunst der Fuge BWV 1080 is offered together with Mendelssohn’s fugue Op. 81, No. 4. We will therefore be listening to a programme based on the fugue, Bach’s characteristic composition, but in various styles, led by Kostadin Bogdanoski, one of the most outstanding musicians of the Gran Teatre del Liceu Orchestra.
Likewise, on 9th February Un Ballo in Maschera is debuting at the Liceu, making this concert a superb chamber music prelude that splendidly enriches our city’s cultural offering.
